GENERAL PRINCIPLES GOVERNING ELIGIBILITY.
No Australian-bred brood mare being returned as such for the first time will be considered for inclusion in the Australian Stud Book unless she has been entered previously as produce under her dam and a name has been registered for her.
Any horse or mare may be considered as eligible to apply for admission to the Australian Stud Book if it has been recorded as a foal in a recognised Stud Book and it can be proved:
1.That it can be traced without flaw on both sire's and dam's side of its pedigree to horses or mares already accepted for the General Stud Book, to certain approved sires, or to the following mares or tap-roots which have not been satisfactorily traced into the General Stud Book:

2. to have eight (8) crosses of pure blood, to trace back for at least a century and to show such performances of its immediate family on the turf as to warrant the belief in the purity of its blood.
Keeper's Note, --- Cutty Sark (imp) though necessarily included above is somewhat differently situated from the eighteen mares grouped with her. She was imported from England in 1826, with Spaewife, and was for many years allotted the traceable pedigree afterwards shown to be Spaewife's ‚ see Vol. VII, page 489. Contessa, Empress and Myrtle, abovenamed, will be found mentioned in Mr W.H.E. Wanklyn's Australasian Racehorse under Marvelette, Kerosene and Cariboo respectively.
