The mounted skeleton of champion Sysonby when it was on museum display |
James R. Keene bred the colt SYSONBY (born 1902), who had purchased his dam, Optime, when in foal to the English stallion Melton, from the dispersal of Marcus Daly's Bitter Root Stud in 1901. SYSONBY was the champion colt at 2, and was undefeated at 3. He remained in training at 4, but in June of that year (1906), became ill and died. He was initially buried in front of Keene's stables at Sheepshead Bay race track in Brooklyn, New York. After some months, his body was exhumed and his bones mounted and put on display at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, New York. -- A.P. |
