Family B-10: Petworth Mare

The taproot mare of this family was a mare by Petworth (1794), a son of Precipitate. Her daughter, Springwire, was by Sertorius, who does not appear in the G.S.B. Springwire was probably in the stud of the Sadler family at Stockbridge; Isaac Sadler was an Oxford livery stable owner and racing confederate of the Day brothers who had farms at Northleach and Stockbridge, the latter farm later operated by his son, William. The family was primarily one of flat racers in England.
Springwire's first three foals were by Whalebone's son, Defence, bred by Sadler, who broke down in his first race, the Derby, but was a successful sire of stamina-laden horses. The Defence foals were an unnamed mare, c. 1838, later dam of Prince of Wales, a sire of winners; Gobbo won a hunter's race and became noted sire in the Doncaster area, and a unnamed mare of 1840 (see Mr. Sykes). To the cover of Venison Springwire produced Sparsholt, a winner of five races, including Stockbridge's Stewards' Plate; he was later a sire of winners. Her last listed foal was a filly by Bay Middleton, dam of a short-lived colt, Dundrum, by Comrade.

Mr. Sykes b.c. 1850

Mr. Sykes was bred and raced by E.R. Clark of Middlesex, and was the best running son of his sire, Sir Tatton Sykes. He won ten races worth £3,188. In Newmarket's Cesarewitch handicap of 1855, he beat a field of thirty-four, including King Tom, who broke down during the running. He also won the Roxburgh Handicap at Kelso. He ran in, but did not place in the three classic races for colts, all of which were won that year by English Triple Crown champion West Australian. In the stud he was the "sire of many good horses."
His dam, the 1840 mare by Defence, was probably bred in the Stockbridge stud of William Sadler. She ran at age three for a Mr. Tooke, winning a race on the Isle of Wight. At age four, in Sadler's name, she ran third in the Andover Stakes at Bilbury. She produced two foals for Sadler, including Bright Buck, by Venison, a winner of three races. She then passed into the stud of E.R. Clark, where she bred Mr. Sykes, his brother, Yorkshireman, a winner of two races, and an unnamed sister to these two horses, the dam of Petra (see below). Sold at Tattersalls for 50 guineas, and again in 1859 for 45 guineas, her later foals were all colts, one of which, Master Sykes, by Tadmor, became a stallion.

Petra was bred by Z. Simpson of Roydon, near Diss, in Norfolk. Running for Lord Ribblesdale, she won a sweeptstakes at Newmarket as a juvenile. At age three she ran third in the Leamington Stakes, but went unplaced in the Cesarewitch and Cambrdigeshire at Newmarket. At age four she won the Steward's Cup at Chester, and a Queen's Plate. At age five she won the Liverpool Autumn Cup (beating a field of 14), the Shrewsbury Cup, the Leamington Welter Cup, and two other races. She ran unplaced in the Liverpool Spring Cup at age six. She was retired to stud, probably owned by G. Crook, after which she was in the Moorlands Stud at York for a short time, and in 1876 was sold for ten guineas to a Mr. Haynes.
She produced eight foals, four of them winners. The best was the gelded, long-running Dunois, by Adventurer, a winner of six races on the flat with a total value of £347; three hurdle races, and eighteen steeplechases with a total value of £736. He started in races 127 times. Her other winners were Laird of Glenlochay, a winner of four races, Triplet, a winner of one race, and Comedian, winner of two races. Her daughter, Jenny Geddes, ran six times as a juvenile, placing second and third one time each, and was later a producer.
Her sire was the Ion son Tadmor, a winner of the Ham Stakes, Newmarket's 1848 Produce Stakes, and Newmarket's Column Stakes and Goodwood's Gratwicke Stakes in 1849, who was a stallion in Simpson's stud at Roydon. Her dam, a sister to Mr. Sykes, also bred in Simpson's stud, produced one other winner, Idumaena, a winner of one small race, later a mare in the Middle Park Stud at Eltham, Kent.
