  Family B-11: Robin Hood Mare
graphic

This was an Irish family developed by the Moloneys of Bridge House, Knocklong, Co. Limerick. Maggie, the taproot mare, had been inherited by Daniel Moloney from his father, who had bought her at the Michael O'Brien sale of 1875. O'Brien, of Assolas, Co. Cork, had bred her in 1862, and she had become a famous hunter with the Duhallow Hounds, also winning two hunt races at Ennis.

She produced three winners: Redpath, a very good steeplechaser that also won on the flat; St. David, a winner of a hurdle race and a steeplechase; and Escape, a winner of a steeplechase and several other races. Her daughter, a sister to Redpath, bred eight foals, including Red Bank, who won two steeplechases; Knocklong, a winner of several flat races and four hurdle races; Warpath, used as a stallion in the Moloney stud; Sea Shell, who ran second in a Farmers' Race at Knocklong at age four; and Lizzie Kendal (see Thomond). Sea Shell's best offspring was Bushey Path, a winner of the Hooton Spring Steeplechase and seven other steeplechases; he was by the good stayer Bushey Park. These horses were all bred by Daniel Moloney.

Bohernore b.g. 1913
(Uncle Mac - Thomond's Pride by Master of the Horse)
He won a flat race and three steeplechases, including the Irish Grand National of 1921.

Redpath ch.c. 1877
(Uncas - Maggie by Sunset)
Redpath won three hunters' flat races and nine steeplechases in England and Ireland. He was bred by Daniel Maloney and sold to Belgian Mr. Zigomala; he won the Great Lancashire Chase at Manchester for Zigomala, and ran fourth in the 1885 Grand National (won by Roquefort), and then was sent across the channel to win the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris. He also won the principal steeplechase in Belgium, the Grande Steeple-chase des Flandres, in eight out of nine years. His sire, Uncas, who stood at stud in Ireland, was a leading sire of jumpers in the second half of the nineteenth century; he got four winners of the Irish Derby in addition to his jumpers, and his sons The Citadel, Warspite, and Wild Cherry were also good jumper sires.

The Kiwi ch.f. 1918
(Kosmos Bey - Olive by Santoi)
The Kiwi was bred by Sir William Goulding of Hillbrook, Castleknock, Co. Dublin. As a juvenile she won a race worth £200, and was second to Belsize in the Irish Breeders' Produce Stakes. At age three she won a small race, and then the Irish Oaks Stakes. The next year she ran on the flat and over hurdles, and at age five won a hurdle race in England and placed in both flat races and National Hunt races. She ran one time in each of the succeeding years, while pregnant, and at age ten won a small steeplechase. She bred several foals by Diligence, a son of the great stamina source Hurry On.

Her dam, Olive, by Santoi, also produced Louvois Lass, a winner of five small races between 1919 and 1922, and Olivenna, by Morena, a winner of three small races in 1921. Santoi was a winner of the Ascot Gold Cup and a sire of stayers (he got Santorb, a Doncaster and Ascot Cup winner, four Cesarewitch winners and two sons that won the Liverpool Cup more than once); his best offspring was the half-bred flat runner Shogun (HB-1). The Kiwi's sire, Kosmos Bey, also got the 1915 Irish Oaks winner, Latharna, and a good steeplechaser, Hackler's Bey.

Thomond br.g. 1895
(Sweetheart - Lizzie Kendal by Kendal)
Thomond, bred by Daniel Moloney, was a good runner in Ireland who won thirteen races, including the April Stakes and the Dudley Plate. In 1904 he was packed off to India, and there was a winner of a number of hurdle races.

His dam, Lizzie Kendal, was also bred by Moloney, and dropped her first foal, Thomond, in his stud in 1895, after which she was barren in three successive years, and was sold, in 1898, to Baron Grenier of Gronde, Belgium. The baron sent her to Belgium that year, where she won the Grande Steeple-chase des Flandres, after which she was brought back to Ireland, where she both raced and served as a hunter. Moloney bought her back in 1901, in foal to Master of the Horse. She dropped her 1901 foal, Thomond's Pride that year, who ran second once at age two and once at age three, and then injured herself and was put into Maloney's stud, where she bred Thomond's Pet and Sarsfield, both steeplechase winners. Lizzie Kendal was sold to John McInerney of Co. Clare, after which she was sold to R.J. Walsn of Knocklong; in those studs she produced six more foals, including Ballincarroona, owned by Captain Ian Straker, winner of two steeplechases that ran in the 1919 Grand National, and Olive, the dam of The Kiwi. She died in 1914.
