Family B-23: Extra Number
|
This family, which may have had its roots in the GSB, was mostly a family of hunters, with occasional forays into flat races, small steeplechases and hurdling events, and a branch that did well showing in hunter classes in England. The one good runner in the family was Golden Drop, a stayer that beat "bred" horses in some important handicaps of the era.
Prior says the taproot mare, Extra Number, ran under the pedigree given below, "It was, however, supposed that the pedigree was a fictitious one, and that the mare was in reality by Leopold (son of Phlegon), out of Molly (1847) a chesntut mare by Pantaloon, her dam Industry (winner of the Oaks) by Priam. (Note.--Molly is returned in the G.S.B., vol. iv, p. 118, as having produced a ch. f. by Leopold in 1859--not 1860--which filly last ran at Houghton Meeting at Newmarket in 1861, as the property of her breeder, Baron Rothschild.)" Extra Number, at age five (or six) won a Maiden Hunters' Plate at Derby, and a Hunter's Plate at Newcastle, and was second in the Thirsk Cup. She was purchased by Tom Wilkinson of Green Mile Farm, Retford, in 1867 from the sale of Major Elwon's horses, with her filly Extract at foot, and after breeding several foals, was sold in the early '70s for £10 and may have been sent to Ireland.
Her unnamed daughter by Cavendish (1868) ran three times at the age of four at Doncaster, finishing third of three in the Yorkshire St. Leger (2 miles). Two sons, Wollaton and Eglamour, were winners, Eglamour winning steeplechases; her daughter, Lucena, who ran unplaced as a juvenile, produced some winners on the flat and over fences, including Eleanor, who ran second in one of her two races as a juvenile, and won three steeplechases later in life.
Extra Number's daughter Extract (1867), bred by Major Elwon, won a hunters' stakes at Scarborough, and at age four won the Thirsk Cup and Rothbury Hunt Cup (over 2-1/2 miles), and placed four times. Her son Echo won eight races worth £785, and son Truthful was a versatile winner of eleven flat races worth £524, eleven hurdle races (£527), and three steeplechases (£122). Her daughter Truth won two flat races over two miles, four hurdle races, and two steeplechases over five seasons, and in the stud produced Labouchere, a winner over fences. Her daughter Tissue, bred by Wilkinson, who ran unplaced in a hunters' race at Liverpool at age four, produced several winners over fences, including Society, a winner of six flat races and seven races over fences, later dam of Grandmaster, a steeplechase winner. Tissue also produced Mrs. Grundy for Wilkinson, a premium and gold medal winner in hunter shows, who produced nine live foals, including Golden Fringe and Gossip.

Golden Fringe ch.f. 1883
(Silvester or Discord - Mrs. Grundy by Strathconan)
Golden Fringe, was bred by F.B. Wilkinson of Edwinstowe, Newark, who sold her to H. Marshall, for whom she ran in two selling races at Durham as a juvenile, after which she was sold to M. Dobson Peacock. She produced the stayer Golden Drop (see below); Golden Leaf (see below); Golden Lace;; Golden Quartz, a winner of a hurdle race and seven steeplechases; and Petterill Belle and Stansted, both winners on the flat. Half-siblings to Golden Fringe included Gossip, who broke a bone in her fetlock in training, and later produced Romance, a steeplechase winner, and Scandal, who won a small steeplechase and won first prize at the Hoar Cross Show in 1893.
Peacock was a well-known north country rider and small-time breeder at Penhill, near Middleham, in Yorkshire.
Golden Drop ch.c. 1889
(Tertius - Golden Fringe by Silvester or Discord)
Golden Drop, bred by M. Dobson Peacock of Manor House, Middleham, Yorkshire, was a north country stayer who won the 1892 Breeders' St. Leger, worth £965, and the Manchester November Handicap, and ran third in the Liverpool Cup.
His sire, Tertius, was a son of Marquis of Carabas (1865, by Marsyas and out of a Kingston mare). His dam was Golden Fringe.
Golden Leaf ch.f. 1894
(Tertius - Golden Fringe by Silvester or Discord)
The lovely chestnut Golden Leaf, bred by M.D. Peacock, placed third in her only race at age three, and at age five won one race, placed second once and third once. In the stud of Captain W.R. Trotter, Langton Grange, Gainford, Darlington (Co. Durham), she produced two foals, one of which, Golden Shield, by Galashiels ( a Galopin son), won two small races. She was then sold to Ernest Robinson of Leighton Buzzard, Bucks., who campaigned her heavily in shows such as the Royal Agricultural Society Show of England and the International Horse Show at Olympia where, over the course of six years she won 24 firsts, 19 second, 11 thirds, 2 Challenge Cups, 8 Gold Medals, 1 Silver Medal and 3 Reserve Medals. She bred six live foals for Robinson, including Easter Egg, a winner of numerous championships, medals, and premiums at national and local shows from foalhood to age three; Red Leaf, likewise a winner of Cups, medals, and first places as weanling and through age two, and Golden Sahib, a winner of several prizes as a foal.
Her sister, Golden Lace, also bred by Peacock, was unraced, but produced two winners: Laura Gold, winner of a steeplechase, who was exported to Holland where her new owner, Jonkherr Ch. de Pester, bred from her Golden Amour, a winner of the Dutch Derby, and Golden Lassie, second in the Dutch Derby. Golden Lace's second winner was Black Lace, who won eight races, and was later exported to Belgium.
