The taproot mare of this family was a mare called Polly, by Ratan, a winner of the Ascot New Stakes and Newmarket's Criterion Stakes, who stood for at least some time at Alvediston in Salisbury. Prior could find no information on Polly or her breeder. She produced Melandra, a winner of one race worth £94, and Richmond Lass. Richmond Lass was the dam of Inveresk, a north country stayer and the best runner in this family. In addition to Inveresk, Richmond Lass produced Inverary, who ran for three seasons, placing third at age three; Calton, a winner on the flat and over hurdles, and Little Fif, a winner of one race. From the names of breeders Invery's subsequent progeny (and the name, Richmond Lass) , it appears this family was based in Yorkshire.
Invery's offspring, bred by R. Wells in Yorkshire, including Dark Palm, a winner of one race as a juvenile, who was, at age five, tried in hurdles. She bred three winners, Silver Stream, a winner of a flat race and two hunters' flat races; Palm Bloom, a winner on the flat and of two National Hunt flat races, and of two steeplechases; and Switchback, a winner of a small steeplechase. Silver Stream, in the stud of James Darrell of West Ayton, York, produced Silver, a winner of first prizes in shows at Bridlington and Whitby in 1896, and a reserve winner at a show in Malton in 1897 and at the London show in 1898. Palm Bloom, who ran to the age of seven, was owned by A. Ainslie, and some time after 1894 was sold to W. Cairns of Walltower Farm, Midlothian.

Inveresk br.c. 1869
(Lambton - Richmond Lass by Arthur Wellesley)
Inveresk, owned by W. Nicholl, was a winner of six races, including the 2-1/4 mile Chester Cup of 1872, in which he beat some good north country runners, including Hawthornden. His sire, Lambton, a son of The Cure, got some good stayers, including Shannon, a winner of the Goodwood and Doncaster Cups, and Planet, a winner of the Great Metropolitan handicap at Epsom. Lambton is also seen in the pedigrees of Marco and Bronzino. Prior indicates Inveresk's dam, Richmond Lass, did not run, but she may have been a runner in Yorkshire. Her sire, Arthur Wellesley, by Melbourne, ran third in the 1854 St. Leger and stood in various places in Yorkshire including Rawcliffe Paddocks in York. He was dam's sire of Ascot Gold Cup winner Bird of Freeedom. Inveresk was later a sire "of good stock."
