Bay 1738. Bred by Francis, (2nd) Earl of Godolphin, given by him to Sir William Middleton in 1748. Sired a handful of foals listed in the GSB (1749-1758), his unnamed daughter from Spinster (1743) by Crab being important in Family 4 (Second dam of Telemachus (1770, by Herod) and Expectation (1779, by Herod)), and son Coomb (1749) a racehorse. His most influential offspring does not appear in the GSB, a colt who ran under the name of Stiff Dick and/or Little Janus and was exported to the U.S., there racing and standing under the name Janus (see below).

Chestnut 1746. Owned by Anthony Swymmer, an early Jockey Club member and M.P. for Southampton. Ran between 1750 and 1752; won twice at 4 miles, retired due to lameness. Sold to breeder and turf enthusiast George Grisewood, who re-sold him to Mordecai Booth, who owned a Virginia plantation near Gloucester. Imported by Booth into the U.S. in 1756, briefly ran there. In his long life passed through a succession of owners, mostly in North Carolina. He stood 14 hands 3/4 inches and was heavily muscled in appearance, small and blocky, quite unlike other four-mile heat runners of his day. Because of the speed he endowed on his progeny, Janus became a premier sire of quarter mile running horses, and thus had an important influence in the development of the American Quarter Horse. His most significant offspring include Meade's Celer, Peacock, Babram, Twigg, Buie, and numerous daughters key in American families. He died in North Carolina at the age of 34.

Grey 1749. Bred by Nathaniel Curzon, sold to Sir James Lowther in 1756. Ran between 1753-1760. At age 4 won twice, at Cirencester and Litchfield. At age 5, renamed Jason, he won three races at Epsom, Dunstable and Newmarket; in 1735-36 he continued unbeaten at Guildford, Canterbury, Lewes, Stamford, Huntingdon, and other country meets, and at Newmarket, where he won the King's Plate in October 1755. Sold to Lowther, at age 8 he won the Jockey Club Plate at Newmarket, beating the good horses Brilliant and Spectator, among others, and a six mile, 500 guineas match, also at Newmarket. Ran in the 1758 Jockey Club Plate at Newmarket, age 9, finally beaten in a heavily contested race against Mizra (first) and Matchem (second). Used as a trial horse in 1759, he returned to the turf in 1760 for one last race, a match of 500 guineas, against Jessamy, which he won. Private stallion in Sir James Lowther's Stud at Lowther Castle, Westmoreland, getting a series of "good racehorses" for Lowther and Sir Harry Harpur, around 20 in all between 1762 and 1777, including the 1770 grey colt Pleader and the 1771 grey colt Sloven, both from the mare Miss Harvey ("The Flying Mare"). |

Sired around 30 foals between 1780 and 1799, about half of them for the Duke of Cumberland, or for his nephew, George, Prince of Wales. Some of his offspring include the racehorses Chance (1780), Ossian (1796), and Nutshell (1785), and Louisa (1794, dam of St. Leger winner Petronius (1805)) and Brown Javelin (1793, dam of Cowslip and important in Family 24). |

C. 1700. Possibly bred by Charles Pelham. Owned by Sir Roger Moystn of Lincolnshire, he was, according to the GSB, a "common country stallion" until [Old] Partner's racing excellence was shown on the turf at age 6. Important early sire, he got the dam of Coneyskins (1712) and Brisk (1711), both significant sires; (Old) Partner (1718, famous racehorse and influential sire); the dam of Bolton Patriot (1729); the dam of (Henage's) Jigg (c.1720) and (Henage's) Whitenose (1722); Robinson Crusoe (a good racehorse and sire of the 1740s racehorses Cripple and Bucephalus); the racehorse Bumper; Miss Jigg (1717, dam of Mab, Family 9), and an unnamed son who got the racemare and producer Whimsey.

Brown c. 1720. Got a daughter (out of his own dam, according to the GSB), who was dam of (Hunt's) Jigg, 1741; Jigg-of-Jiggs and Heel-and-Toe (1745, and 1751 respectively; GSB reports sired by their own brother (Hunt's) Jigg); a colt named Spanker (1747) and a colt named Fox (1749), the latter two by their great-grandsire, Goliah. At least two of these highly in-bred offspring made it to the racecourse: Jigg of Jiggs ran in 1750 at Malton (beaten by Sampson); (Hunt's) Spanker won a King's Plate at Lichfield in 1752.

At the end of the 19th century, he was still among the top three sons of Eclipse (along with Pot-8-Os and King Fergus) whose sire line descendants were top stallions.

Offspring included the good runner and sire Ardrossan (1809); the racehorses Muley-Moloch (1803), Gauntlet (1803), Alfred (1796), Fortitude (1797), and Georgiana (1897); the producers Violante (third dam of Flatcatcher, Legerdemain, Sleight of Hand, Phryne), and Lady Cow (second dam of Derby winner Azor). He died at the age of 23, in 1812. |

Bay 1794. Bred by J.H. Durand. Ran at Newmarket and country meets between 1797 and 1800, at distances between 2 and 4 miles, often on successive days. At age 3 won £50 running 2 mile heats the same day he lost an earlier race at Alfriston, Sussex, and later in the season won at Egham, the next day running another £50 race over 2 miles in heats. In 1798 he won purses at Ascot, Canterbury, Newmarket October (beating Parisot), and placed second at Newmarket October in a sweep won by Oatlands. In 1799 he won six races, including the Ladies' Plate at Lewes, in which he beat Gohanna, placed in several other races. At age 6, ran once at Epsom and lost, and was retired. He died in 1811.

DAM: Mare by Partner (Family unknown). Not identified in GSB, mistaken in that book and the ASB for the son of another Partner mare, Roger of the Vale (1741, by Roundhead), corrected as far as is known in the mid-20th century.
Chestnut 1743. According to Hervey [Racing in America, V. I, 1665-1865], bred by the Duke of Kingston, and run by him between 1748-1751. Imported into the U.S. in the fall of 1751 by John Spotswood and his brother-in-law, Bernard Moore and stood at Newpost, Rosegill and other Viriginia plantations until his death in 1769. A daughter (from Kitty Fisher) produced top runner and sire, Symmes' Wildair (by Fearnought), and two other daughters established American families A26 and A51. There were two other Jolly Rogers, born in the 1760s, one by Regulus, the other by the Gower Stallion, with a combined total in the GSB of six unnamed offspring.

His named offspring, of around 15 total listed in the GSB, include Young Juniper (1777), Young Juniper (1781) and Dromedary (1783). Not to be confused with Juniper (1752) by Babraham, who ran at Newmarket in the 1750s and was exported to the U.S.

Sold to Thomas Douglas who ran him between 1777 and 1779. At age 3, he won two sweepstakes at Newmarket, beating horses such as Comet, Sweet Marjoram and Vengeance. He won one race in 1778, running last in the Newmarket October subscription purse won by Highflyer, and failed to place in 1779. Retired to Douglas' stud, afterwards stood in Yorkshire at the stud of Colonel Thornton. Sired the racehorses Ganymede (1784); Miss Pratt (1789); Thunderbolt (1787), Jupiter (1792, see below) and around 15 others.
